  11. This read-me file contains information about system 
  12. requirements and installation instructions.

  14. Before you install Netscape 6.1, be sure to read the
  15. Release Notes, which describe known problems and 
  16. installation issues:

  30.  
  31. To view and use the new streamlined "Modern" theme,
  32. your display monitor should be set to display 
  33. thousands of colors. For users who cannot set their 
  34. displays to use more than 256 colors, Netscape 
  35. recommends using the "Classic" theme for
  36. Netscape 6.1.
  37.     
  38. To select the Classic theme after you have installed
  39. Netscape 6.1:
  40.     
  41.      1. Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  42.      2. Under the Appearance category, choose Themes.
  43.      3. Click to select the Classic theme.
  44.      4. Click the Apply Classic button, then click OK.
  45.      Changed themes take effect after you restart 
  46.      Netscape 6.1.
  47.  
  48. During installation, the creation of temporary files
  49. requires more free disk space than listed below.

  53.      -Mac OS 8.6 or later, Mac OS 9
  54.      -PowerPC 604e 266 MHz or faster processor, G3,

  74.       libraries glibc 2.1 (or higher) and 
  75.       libjpeg.so.62 (or higher) are required.]

  84.               Installation Instructions

  88. For Mac OS and Windows users, it is strongly 
  89. recommended that you exit all programs before running 
  90. the setup program. Also, you should temporarily 
  91. disable virus-detection software.
  92.  
  93. Install into a clean (new) directory. Installing on
  94. top of released product builds may cause problems.
  95.  
  96. *Installation Instructions -- Windows
  97.      
  98.      1. If you are installing from the CD: 
  99.      - Double-click the Windows directory on the 
  100.      Netscape 6.1 CD to open it, if you haven't done 
  101.      so already. 
  102.      
  103.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  104.      - Click the N6Setup.exe link to download it to 
  105.      your machine.
  106.      
  107.      2. Double-click the N6Setup program icon on 
  108.      your machine to begin the Setup program.
  109.      
  110.      3. Follow the on-screen instructions in the 
  111.      Setup program. The program starts automatically 
  112.      the first time.
  113.  
  114. *Installation Instructions -- Mac OS
  115.  
  116.      Note: It is strongly recommended that you do not
  117.      disable extensions before installing Netscape 6.1
  118.      on Mac OS.
  119.  
  120.      1. If you are installing from the CD:
  121.      - Skip to step 3 now.
  122.      
  123.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  124.      - Click the Netscape6Installer.sea.bin link to
  125.      download it to your machine. 
  126.      
  127.      By default, the download file (compressed in
  128.      MacBinary II format, with an extension of .bin)
  129.      is downloaded to your desktop.
  130.      
  131.      If the downloaded file does not expand 
  132.      automatically, you must expand the file using a 
  133.      program such as StuffIt Expander. If you don't 
  134.      have StuffIt Expander, you can get a copy by
  135.      visiting:     
  136.

  139.      2. Double-click the Netscape 6 Installer 
  140.      folder.
  141.      
  142.      3. Double-click the Netscape 6 Installer 
  143.      icon.
  144.      
  145.      4. Follow the on-screen instructions to 
  146.      complete the installation process. The 
  147.      program starts automatically the first time.
  148.      
  149. *Installation Instructions -- Unix
  150.  
  151.      1. If you are installing from the CD:
  152.      - Change to the Linux directory on the CD: 
  153.      cd linux. Then skip to step 3.
  154.      
  155.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  156.      - Download the netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz 
  157.      archive.
  158.  
  159.      2. Type one of the following to gunzip and 
  160.      untar the archive: 
  161.      tar -zxvf netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz
  162.      OR
  163.      gzip -dc netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz | tar xvf -
  164.      
  165.      3. Change to the directory that contains the
  166.      Netscape installation files:
  167.      cd netscape-installer
  168.  
  169.      4. Run the Netscape 6.1 Installer with the run 
  170.      script:
  171.      ./netscape-installer
  172.      
  173.      5. Follow the on-screen instructions to 
  174.      complete the installation process.
  175.  
  176.      6. To start Netscape, change to the directory 
  177.      where you installed it and run the program: 
  178.      ./netscape 
  179.      The program starts automatically the first time.
